Precautions for using straw bales in animal husbandry

Bale production reduces DM and leaf losses during harvest, thereby increasing protein and total digestible nutrients (TDN) compared to hay from the same field. In most cases, baling also reduces feeder waste compared to hay. However, once exposed to air, the bales will begin to spoil, so it is recommended to consume the bales within 48 to 72 hours of exposure to air. Smaller bales consisting of less dry matter also increase the frequency with which bales must be delivered to cows.
