Five tips to reduce outdoor storage loss:
1. Make a dense bale. Dense bales shed more precipitation, sag less and hold their shape better.
2. Use mesh packaging. Netting can be installed faster than twine, which means less labor and fuel. Mesh wrapping reduces sagging and helps the bale maintain its shape.
3. Choose a good location to reduce contact with the ground. To minimize bottom spoilage, store in a well-drained area with a 4 to 6-inch rock base, or place bales on pallets, poles, or railroad ties.
4. Correct positioning. Place them end to end and line up in a row, facing northwest to southeast as much as possible. Space adjacent lines at least 10 feet apart.
5. Avoid stacking uncovered bales outdoors. Stacking bales increases losses. Place bales in pyramid stacks or ends to maximize space.
