Baleage has several benefits

Curing time for bale forage is significantly reduced compared to hay production, reducing the impact of weather on harvest. This is a significant advantage when trying to harvest forage in conditions that are not conducive to making hay. The shorter time required for baling allows cuttings to be taken earlier and more frequently, thereby improving the overall quality of the stored forage.

However, higher moisture content makes the bales heavier. Bale size may need to be reduced to fit existing machinery. In many operations, round bale diameter is reduced by 12 inches or more to keep bale weight within the control limits of bale haulers, front-end loaders and feed mixing equipment.
