animal husbandry feed
Stored winter forage is a hot commodity for cattle, and many cattlemen are considering harvesting more corn stover bales than usual for feed. Get more from this low-quality, cost-effective forage resource by following good management practices during harvesting, storage and feeding.
Bale within four weeks of harvest for maximum potential quality. The feed value of corn stover bales is lower than that of grazing due to the increased ratio of straw to rice husks and leaves. While mowing and raking often makes baling easier, this can increase the content of dirt and ash, which can lead to feed palatability and animal health issues. For best results, consider loosening the spreaders on the back of your combine to create a leaf and husk based harvester for a higher quality bale. Aim for a moisture content of 15% to avoid the formation of mold, which can be a feed quality and animal health issue.
